Fruit Fly Trap

Does anybody else have infestations of fruit flies lately? S and I learned how to make a fruit fly trap from his parents that is super effective.

You take a small glass jar, stick a piece of rotting (or close to rotting) fruit or veggie in it, roll up a piece of paper into a cone, with just a TINY little hole at the bottom (big enough to let the flies CRAWL in, but small enough that they can't FLY out...so it's important that the cone sits high enough that it doesn't touch the fruit, or else they will just climb out). Then tape the edges so they can't climb out between the edges of the cone and the jar, and let it sit on the counter. Remember to dump out the contents every 2-3 days or else you'll have larva growing in the jar. I dump it in the garbage OUTSIDE.
One more thing: If you have fruit or veggies on the counter that seem to already be attracting the fruit flies, use a small amount of that in the jar. I mean, you already know they like it, so why not! Just make sure to put the rest of it in the fridge so they go after the little bit in the jar instead.

My aunt taught me a similar concept for catching bees. It works amazingly. Take a plastic pop bottle (I prefer 2L but any size will work) then take an exacto knife and cut the top off, just where the sides go straight down, now you have the bottom 3/4 of the bottle and the top cone shape (unscrew/remove the cap off as well.). Put fruit, honey, pop, whatever sweet stuff you have in the bottom part of the bottle to attract the bees, even a bit of beer mixed in works (just make sure that there is a decent amont of liquid on the bottom). Now take the top cone of the bottle that you had cut off earlier and flip it upside down and put it snuggly into the body of the bottle, so that you have a cone shape for the bees to climb down into the bottle but they can't find their way out. Then you can tape around the top where the top cone and bottom part of the bottle meet for good measure and voila! You have a bee catcher.
It works great, they just get in there but can't find their way out and eventually drown in the sugary liquid you have in the bottom.
One day this summer I caught like 8 bees in a small bottle in the span of a couple hours.
Enjoy (well at least next summer i guess)
