Is Love Necessary?

I read a quote on a friend's status today that intrigued me...

"Oscar Wilde quite rightly said, 'All art is useless'.  And that may sound as if it means it's something not worth supporting.  But if you actually think about it, the things that matter in life are useless.  Love is useless.  Wine is useless.  Art is the love and wine of life.  It is the extra, without which life is not worth living."-Stephen Fry

I cannot help but disagree with this quotation, as beautiful as the idea sounds.  Although, I think love is useless outside of faith.  Faith is a sticky, messy, jump into the unknown.  Without faith, love seems useless.

"One cannot live a faithful life (as a child of God) without it (love).  May God help us all both learn and  to remember the necessity of love."

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love."-Galations 5:6b

Now, granted, wine is 'useless' to me... but it's an extra that I enjoy.  Art is an expression of emotion.  But love... it has too many meanings to be put in such a box.
As confusing as it is to define love... I know that...

"God is love"-1 John 4:8

The reason I can hope for life beyond death is love.  Love is no longer just an extra that makes life worth living, like wine.  It is a necessity.  May my life reflect that.
